Summary: Mark Clayburn is a one-eyed jack-of-all-trades: literary agent, notary public, and private investigator. He is hired by Hollywood talent agent Harry Bannock to look into the now cold case murder of a former client: cowboy film star, Dick Ryan. Bannock needs Ryan’s reputation—soiled from an alleged drug scandal link—cleared in order to profit from ownership of Ryan’s film catalog. As Clayburn investigates, former associates of the late actor who might have knowledge into the truth are themselves murdered. Clayburn must stop the killer before the killer stops him.
Bloch: “While I’m in a contrite mood, let me also apologize to both of the readers who bought a paperback containing my short story collection, Terror in the Night combined with an original novel titled Shooting Star. I have no particular qualms regarding the stories, but the novel is one of a dozen or more of my worst.”
Note: Published bound with Bloch's Terror in the Night collection (seven stories first printed in various digest-sized mystery magazines).
