The Cabinet of Caligari (1962)
Summary: When a young woman’s car breaks down, she makes her way to a frightening-looking mansion for help. Once there, however, her problems go from bad worse.

Bloch: “The story I’d evolved was not a clone of the original, though it bore a recognizable resemblance. What I wanted was to tell the story in a fashion which would appear utterly realistic and convincing to an audience. There would be no telltale expressionist set designs, no grotesque costumery or makeup, no clues of aberration in the miming or dialogue.”

Category: Motion Picture
Script: An original screenplay written by Bloch
IMDB page: The Cabinet of Caligari

Notes:
  • The film is a remake of the 1920 German silent classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
  • Bloch's participation in the making of Caligari is one of his most regretful experiences in writing for Hollywood. Director Roger Kay took a number of underhanded steps in an attempt to wrest screenwriting credit from Bloch. At first reluctant to take part in an arbitration battle, upon prompting from studio head Samuel Goldwyn Jr., Bloch presented his case to the Writer’s Guild committee. Bloch won and received back full writing credit. The full details of this experience can be found in Bloch’s autobiography, Once Around the Bloch.
