The House That Dripped Blood (1971)
Summary: An anthology of four horror stories with a wraparound revolving around the disappearing occupants of a mysterious rental house in the U.K.
  • “Method for Murder:” Thriller writer Charles Hillyer and his wife rent the gothically atmospheric house in the hopes that it will inspire him in his writing. It does, all too well.
  • “Waxworks:” Retired Philip Grayson’s hobbies are not enough to keep him busy, so he strolls to a nearby town and comes upon a wax museum where he discovers the horrifying secret behind an exhibit of the biblical Salome and the newly acquired replacement on the platter she holds.
  • “Sweets to the Sweet:” Widower John Reid hires former teacher Ann Norton to tutor his young daughter, Jane. Reid fears his daughter, believing her to be a witch as was her mother. Reid’s beliefs become reality as Jane fashions a waxen voodoo doll which she uses to repeatedly torture her father…and more.
  • “The Cloak:” Paul Henderson, aged, fading horror actor, reduced to appearing in low-budget dreck such as “Curse of the Bloodsuckers,” demands at least a modicum of authenticity in his cloak. Happening upon an antique/costumer’s shop, its eerie owner assures Henderson of having “just the thing.” The actor slowly discovers to his horror the true authenticity of his vampire cloak.

Bloch: “Milton Subotsky had been supplied with a dozen or more volumes of my short stories. When a film is in the offing, either I suggest certain of those stories to him for consideration or he makes choices of his own. Once we agree on the stories to be used, he sends me a short synopsis of a “frame” story: I then make my ideas known about changes or additions to it, and when we are mutually satisfied, I write a screenplay.”—The Robert Bloch Companion

Category: Motion Picture
Script: An original screenplay written by Bloch; the tales adapted by Bloch from his short stories of the same name.

Notes:
  • Theatrical posters for the film incorrectly spell Bloch’s last name (as “Block.”)
  • Vincent Price was first considered for Jon Pertwee’s part of Paul Henderson, but given Price’s exclusive contract with American International Pictures at the time as relating to his involvement in horror films, Price could not accept.
