Bloch: “He [August Derleth] innovated the policy of publishing volumes of short stories by other writers, starting with himself, then Weird Tales contributors Donald Wandrei, Frank Belknap Long, Clark Ashton Smith and Henry S. Whitehead. Now it was my turn. He suggested I go over the one hundred-plus published stories and select a score for collection. It wasn’t easy for me to find twenty titles I felt would bear reprint in a genuine hardcover book which might be sold in real bookstores to actual customers. In the end I wrote an additional story—"One Way to Mars."
